![]() ![]() Stopped at a diner in the tiny town of Clyde (darn good country cooking I might add), but the cigarette smoke really started bothering my asthma. I think the last time I was in NC was in 2009 when we went up to Franklin. I've been looking at maps and considering going through Townsend then taking Little River Road on up over the mountain as I am afraid I will miss my turn going through Knoxville. I'm familiar with the Dragon and you are right its not something I care to drive having ridden it a few times. I am pretty sure that NC passed a law in the last year or so banning smoking in restaurants and that should include Cherokee. We have friends that live down between Cherokee and Bryson but have never been to the casinos or restaurants. Google maps shows it to be the shortest route but several seem to take about 2.5 to 3 hours total trip time so it isn't a big difference. ![]() The slightly shorter option would be taking 129 from I-40 though Maryville across the mountains and within a mile of crossing the border pick up route 28 and take it to 74 and on into Bryson City but it still requires finding the right turns! The scenery will be beautiful both ways but traffic could be an issue going via Gatlinburg and a particularily curvy portion of rte 129 is known as the Dragon by car and motorcycle enthusiasts all over the world and might not be your cup of tea. You've got a lot of driving through the Smokies on fairly twisty roads once you get through Knoxville. ![]()
